Ken Chew, CEO of IWC Management, a MAS-licensed fund management platform in Singapore, commented in a recent interview with Lianhe Zaobao that Chinese companies’ overseas expansion is entering a “second wave of entrepreneurship.”


“In the past, expansion was about setting up entities to avoid tariffs. Now, it is about building real factories, independent business units, and sustainable global operations,” Chew said.


He highlighted that Southeast Asia, and Singapore in particular, has become the first landing point for Chinese enterprises seeking to internationalize. From here, companies can radiate into Indonesia, Malaysia, and beyond, following a “Singapore +1” strategy.


Chew also cautioned that many companies face systemic challenges in their overseas journey, particularly in strategic transformation, intellectual property, and brand building. “If companies do not redesign their models from day one for the global market, they will remain vulnerable to geopolitical risks,” he added.


Singapore’s role as a “super-connector” is reinforced by its capital ecosystem, where family offices, private equity, and patient long-term capital provide critical support for enterprises. Chew noted that investor sentiment is shifting: while some global investors remain cautious about China, others are actively seeking resilient Chinese companies in advanced technology and manufacturing with strong international potential.


“Going overseas is no longer a question of if, but when. For Chinese enterprises, it is now a necessity,” said Chew.
